Could you describe what you do as a musician in plain words that are understandable to a non-musician?
I play baroque (1600-1750) violin.
When and how did you decide to become a professional musician? Did you understand what you signed up for back then? Did it turn out the way you had imagined?
I became a musician because, ironically, out of all the things I was good at, this was the most likely one to become a livelihood. It’s not until I started playing baroque music that I finally felt I had found something I was truly happy doing, despite the financial instability that goes hand in hand with being a self-employed artist.
Do you still listen to music for leisure these days?
All the time, and all kinds of music.
What are some works of music that are in your personal sacred shrine?
The Goldberg Variations.
Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Opus album.
Anything by Yellow Magic Orchestra.
Bach’s French Suites.
What are some recordings that you were inspired by, and why?
Glenn Gould’s work has had an immense influence on me, as well as Enrico Onofri. The rhythm in some literature has also influenced my playing. I think music and speech are almost the same.
The album I have listened to most in my life is probably Glenn Gould’s 1982 Goldberg Variations.
How important is the presentation of sound to you in a recording? Do you believe a recording can be either “musical” or “sterile”?
I think there are good and bad musicians, and good and bad sound engineers.
How does audio playback gear, especially headphones, influence the way you perceive recordings and music in general? Does it inform your own performance? Have Hifiman headphones brought any revelations to your creative work?
Editing my albums while using Arya and HE1000 headphones as well as the Serenade has made the whole process a lot easier and more enjoyable. Everything is so clear, without ever being aggressive or overstimulating. The music feels very real, and within reach. Intonation also comes out as clearer, which means that good intonation is enhanced, and bad intonation more obvious. As someone who listens to music not just for my own enjoyment but also for work, this comes in very handy. I use the headphones also to simply appreciate my favourite music.
What was your proudest work or moment you could share with us? Proudest recording?
Probably my most recent album, « Obsession », but my proudest moments have all happened while practicing at home when no one is listening.
